Custom LED Downlights: What to Confirm Before a Quote

A request for a “20W LED downlight” is a starting point, but it does not give us enough information to recommend a suitable fixture.

We also need to know where the light will be used, how much installation space is available, and what the customer expects it to do. These details affect the choice of housing, LED source, optics and driver—and the final price.

At Fansen Lighting, we work through these requirements with customers before confirming the configuration and quotation.

1. Application and Ceiling Height

Is the light for a home, hotel, retail store or another commercial space? Will it provide general lighting, illuminate a wall, or highlight a display?

Ceiling height is also important. For a high ceiling, wattage alone cannot tell us whether a fixture will deliver the required light on the target surface. We need to consider light output, beam angle, fixture position and the distance to that surface.

If you have a floor plan, ceiling height or reference photos, send them with your inquiry. Please also tell us whether the installation area is dry, damp or exposed to water so we can review any IP rating requirements.

2. Cutout Size and Installation Depth

For recessed fixtures, please confirm both the ceiling cutout and the available installation depth.

Two fixtures with the same cutout can have different overall heights. A deeper optical assembly, adjustable mechanism or larger heat sink may require more space above the ceiling.

For a replacement project, photos and dimensions of the existing fixture are helpful. We also need to check whether there is enough room for the driver and wiring.

3. Wattage, Beam Angle and Glare Control

The same wattage does not guarantee the same lighting result. LED efficiency, optical losses and beam distribution all affect how much light reaches the intended area.

A narrow beam concentrates light into a smaller area. A wider beam covers more space. The right choice depends on the lighting task and fixture layout.

Glare control should also be considered, especially where people may look toward the fixture from a sofa, bed or seating area.

4. Colour Temperature and Colour Rendering

Please specify the required colour temperature and colour rendering index (CRI).

Also let us know whether you need a fixed colour temperature or tunable white lighting. These require different LED and driver configurations.

If the project has particular finishes, products or artwork to illuminate, a sample test can help confirm the appearance before placing a production order.

5. Dimming, Controls and Input Voltage

Please tell us which control system the project uses and which functions are required: switching, brightness adjustment, colour temperature adjustment, or a combination of these.

For systems such as DALI, 0–10V or Tuya, the driver and control components must be selected to match the required functions. The name of the system alone may not fully describe the configuration.

Where possible, provide the controller or dimmer model so compatibility can be checked before production. Please also confirm the supply voltage and destination country.

6. Quantity, Budget and Customisation

Order quantity, target budget and delivery requirements help us propose a practical configuration.

Please also specify any requirements for the LED source, driver brand, housing colour, logo or packaging. We can then explain the available options and their effect on the quotation.

Once the configuration is agreed, a sample can be prepared for approval before the production order proceeds.

A Recent Custom Spotlight Order

For a recent residential order, a customer needed smart recessed spotlights for a space with a ceiling height of approximately five metres. The agreed specification included a 95mm cutout and 20W operation.

We selected a housing with additional heat dissipation capacity, paired it with an OSRAM dual-colour LED source, and used a driver with selectable output settings.

The components were selected for the agreed operating conditions. The spotlight was configured for 20W operation; the higher capacity of the housing and LED source provided design margin rather than increasing its operating wattage.

Send Us Your Project Requirements

For a quotation, send us the application, ceiling height, cutout size, installation depth, required lighting functions, supply voltage and quantity. If you have a target budget or preferred component brands, include those as well.

You do not need to have every specification ready. Send us the information you have, and we will help confirm the remaining details.
