Lighting that supports atmosphere, food presentation and daily operation
Restaurant and cafe lighting must do more than make a space visible. It should support the dining atmosphere, present food naturally, provide visual comfort for guests, help staff work efficiently and adapt to different operating periods.

A practical plan should consider entrance visibility, table illumination, food colour, glare, brightness contrast, bar and display emphasis, operating scenes, cleaning and maintenance access. Different hospitality concepts require different priorities: a quick-service restaurant may favour clear and efficient illumination, while a cafe may focus on comfort and dwell time. Fine-dining restaurants generally need stronger visual hierarchy, controlled table lighting and flexible dimming.

These illuminance ranges are preliminary planning references only, not fixed standards for every project. Final values should be confirmed according to the space function, ceiling height, surface reflectance, equipment layout, local regulations and project lighting calculations.
Kitchen and food-preparation areas require a separate technical review. Fixture selection should consider the required protection rating, grease and moisture exposure, cleaning method, food-safety requirements, ambient temperature and applicable local regulations. Dining-area requirements should not be applied to these areas without review.
Entrance and signage lighting
The entrance should help customers identify the restaurant and understand its visual character before entering. Signage, entrance walls, menus and reception counters may need separate lighting rather than simply increasing the brightness of the whole façade.
Controlled-beam LED spotlights can highlight signage, menus and architectural details. Position and aiming should be checked to prevent unnecessary light from entering the street, neighbouring properties or customers’ direct view. Outdoor and semi-outdoor locations also require a protection rating appropriate to actual rain, moisture and dust exposure.
Dining area lighting
Dining areas need a balance between visibility and atmosphere. General illumination may be provided by pendants, indirect lighting or anti-glare LED downlights, while controlled accents create emphasis on tables, artwork or architectural surfaces.
A practical scheme retains enough ambient light for orientation and facial visibility while using table lighting to establish a clear visual focus. Excessive contrast between tables and their surroundings can be uncomfortable when guests look up or move through the space.
Dining table lighting
Beam angle should be selected according to table size, mounting height, fixture spacing and target illuminance. Approximately 15°–24° may suit a small focal area or higher mounting position; 24°–36° is often considered for standard tables; and 36°–60° may suit larger tables, long tables or lower ceilings.
These are early references rather than fixed rules. A very narrow beam may create an excessively bright small spot, while a wide beam may reduce table emphasis or place unnecessary light on guests and circulation areas. Final fixture positions should be checked against the confirmed furniture plan.
Food presentation, CRI and colour temperature
CRI 90 or above is commonly considered for many dining environments. Projects that emphasise meat, bakery products, desserts, coffee or detailed plating may require closer attention to red rendering, colour saturation and spectral quality. Because identical CRI values can still produce different results, sample testing with actual food, table surfaces and interior materials is recommended.
Approximately 2700K–3000K may suit warm fine-dining, lounge and cafe environments; 3000K–3500K can balance warmth and clarity; and 3500K–4000K may suit selected quick-service, bakery and brighter retail-style food spaces. Connected areas should remain visually coordinated unless a contrast is intentional.
Bar counters and display areas
Bar counters combine staff tasks, customer service, product display and visual branding. Adjustable LED track lights can provide flexibility when displays, menus or seating arrangements may change. Track layout and fixture quantity should still be planned carefully so the ceiling does not become visually crowded.
Integrated LED strip lights can be used inside shelves, below counters or within architectural details. Suitable aluminium profiles, diffusers and drivers help reduce visible light points, manage heat and maintain more consistent brightness. Glass display cabinets should also be checked for reflections, maintenance access and cleaning requirements.
Corridors, washrooms and shared areas
These spaces require enough light for safe movement and orientation, but they do not always need the same brightness as dining tables. Downlights, wall lighting and low-level guidance lighting can define paths, steps and floor-level changes.
Washroom and mirror lighting should provide suitable vertical illumination rather than relying only on overhead light. Protection ratings should be selected according to the actual moisture exposure and installation zone.
Operating Scenes
Daylight and day-to-night modes
Restaurants and cafes with large windows should treat daylight as part of the plan. Window zones may need less artificial light during the day, while internal areas may still require stable ambient illumination.
Separate zones can be created for windows, central dining areas, bar counters and decorative lighting. Day mode can balance artificial light with daylight; evening mode can lower general brightness and strengthen table emphasis; night mode can retain table, bar and circulation lighting; and cleaning mode can temporarily increase general illumination.
Visual Comfort
Glare control and fixture positioning
Guests often remain in fixed seated positions for extended periods, making glare control particularly important. Deep-set light sources, suitable reflectors, shielding accessories and honeycomb louvres may help reduce direct glare, but fixture structure alone is not enough.
Position, mounting height, aiming direction, surface reflectance and surrounding brightness all affect comfort. Seating positions should be reviewed from both seated and standing viewing angles before final aiming.
Lighting Controls
Flexible control for different operating periods
Depending on the electrical design and budget, options may include separate switched circuits, phase-cut dimming, 0–10V dimming, DALI, programmable scenes, scheduling, daylight sensing or occupancy sensing. The selected method must be compatible with the drivers, circuit design, fixture quantity and commissioning capability.
Before ordering, confirm the dimming protocol, minimum dimming level, circuit groups and expected flicker performance. For restaurant chains, consistent control settings and lighting scenes can help different locations maintain a more uniform customer experience.

Useful inputs include the floor plan, reflected ceiling plan, ceiling height, table, bar and display locations, interior renderings, material references, preferred colour temperature, dimming requirements, local voltage and certification needs, estimated quantities, delivery location and project schedule.
